Austin Cumming and Bugatti Cruise to a Win in $5,000 USHJA Open National Hunter Derby Presented by The Farm House
July 21, 2023 – Aboard Bugatti, Austin Cumming (Madison, GA) kicked off Friday morning by taking the win in the $5,000 USHJA Open National Hunter Derby presented by The Farm House. The pair scored a 174, besting a field of seventeen entries. Nashea Powell (Jacksonville, FL) and Hearts Forever (Breemeersen Adorado x Topaline van de Gasthoeve), the 2011 Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Live Oak Partners Investments, LLC, earned second with a score of 170. Placing third with a score of 169 was Jennifer Sabella and Here I Come (Lordanos x Chirelle), Cassie Pender’s 2009 Oldenburg gelding.
Being one of the younger horses to compete in the derby, Bugatti (Balou x W-Xiamen) has already seen plenty of success in the hunter ring. “He’s a six-year-old this year. We got to go to Devon, and are now getting ready for incentive finals,” Austin Cumming shared.
This win marks a significant milestone for the 2016 Holsteiner gelding owned by Liddy Strickland. Cumming shared that “today is the first time winning for him in a national derby, so he’s growing up a lot. We’re really proud of him, and hopefully there’s a lot more to come.”
Cumming described Bugatti’s preparation routine as “a lot of riding, and a lot of early mornings. He did the greens earlier this week, as well as the confirmation, to let him see everything, so he's not playing around.”
The course designed by Skip Bailey (USA) was full of challenging elements, but Cumming was thrilled with Bugatti’s performance. “[It was] a forward, flowing course,” he detailed. “The broken nine to the two was a little slow, but the rest of it was nice and flowy. I love seeing the hay bales in there, as it’s challenging in the handy. [Bugatti] handled it really well.”
Austin Cumming and his team have been enjoying all Tryon has to offer. “We love being able to trot [the horses] out here, and everything is close. There’s just a fun atmosphere here.”

Stella Wasserman and Skyhawk Victors of $5,000 USHJA Junior/Amateur National Hunter Derby Presented by The Farm House
July 21, 2023 – Stella Wasserman (Beverly Hills, CA) claimed a derby win for the second week in a row with Skyhawk, this time in the $5,000 USHJA Junior/Amateur National Hunter Derby Presented by The Farm House. Wasserman collected a score of 176.5 with the 2009 gelding for the win. Taking reserve honors was Erin Arnold (Austin, TX) and her own 2011 Holsteiner gelding, MTM One Time (Chin Champ x Lorentina), scoring a 168.5. Taylor Matalon (Roswell, GA) and her own 2009 Belgian Warmblood gelding, Semi-Automatic C (Cicero Van Paemel Z x Ulise Uit Noorden), earned third place with a score of 164.
According to Wasserman, Skyhawk (Quick Lauro Z x Aevita), owned by Laura Wasserman, is a pro when it comes to derbies. “Derbies are kind of his thing, and that's what he excels at,” Wasserman remarked. “Honestly, I just go in there, trust him, and believe that he can win it. And that seems to work!”
Wasserman also commented on the unique format of the derby. “I think Hunt-n-Gos are so fun! You really get to do both in one round, and I think that's exciting. It's a bit of a change of pace. I really liked doing handies on him, so it was fun to do that too.”
As a busy competitor showing hunters and jumpers, Wasserman has a busy weekend ahead. “I jump the 3* Grand Prix tomorrow, and the highs and the National Grand Prix on Sunday,” she shared.
Wasserman praised her team and trainers for helping her manage her hectic show schedule. “I would have to say a lot of the credit goes to my trainers! They are always telling me where to be. I try to keep on top of ShowGrounds, and make sure all my horses get to everywhere they need to be.”
