Mill Spring, NC – July 10, 2024 – Charging to the win in Tryon Stadium, it was Hallie Grimes (USA) and Karoline of Ballmore (Diarado x Convento Van De Helle), owned by Can We Keep It? LLC, who were fastest in the $32,000 ProElite Welcome Stake CSI 2*, finishing with 35.77 seconds on the clock. Fractions of a second behind the top-scoring team, Amanda Derbyshire (GBR) and her own 2012 Zangersheide stallion, Otto BH (Norton D’ Eole x Toulon), marked a second place time of 36.17 seconds. Completing the top three with a time of 36.94 seconds was Ashlee Bond (ISR) and Night Wish (Unknown x Unknown), Aurora Farms’ 2016 Hanoverian gelding.

Welcome Stake winner Hallie Grimes shared that her equine partner’s extensive career was  According to Grimes, the Belgian Warmblood mare known as “Korra”, “has a lot of experience with a lot of different riders. She can be a bit tricky, so I consider myself quite lucky to have been picked by her. She's given me plenty of experience, and she was great today – she's so fast.”

Grimes relied on the Belgian Warmblood mare’s footspeed to make up for the jump off’s challenging time constraints. “A lot of the horses were doing eight strides to the last fence,” she explained. “I tried to catch Amanda [Derbyshire], and was kicking the whole way, and I couldn't quite get there. I did nine strides, and Korra was quick enough and clever enough to get that done and still be fast.”

Acknowledging the team surrounding her and Karoline of Ballmore, Grimes noted that “Nickki O’Donovan is the very best. She's my barn manager. She's been with me for about a year and a half now, and she was here today, and I think that made it extra special.”

“This was my first ranking class win! I'm really thankful for my team back at home, Sarah Scheiring especially – I'm thankful for all of them,” Grimes added.

Victoria Colvin Doubles Down in $7,500 USHJA National Derby Presented by AP Hassinger

July 12, 2024 – Victoria Colvin’s team of hunters stormed the derby field Friday morning, with all three of the Loxahatchee, FL rider’s mounts placing in the top six of the $7,500 USHJA National Derby Presented by AP Hassinger. As the last rider on course, Colvin captured first with Gabriel (Azteca VDL x Ribalia H. B), owned by J T Farm, scoring a 184. Holding the high score of 180 for the majority of the morning until her final ride, Colvin took second place aboard Playwright (Cascadello L x Tatiana LL), the 2015 Holsteiner gelding, for Pine Castle Farms. Upon her win, Victoria Colvin detailed her longtime partnership with Gabriel, who she has competed with since the 2011 Dutch Warmblood gelding’s pre-green days. “He and I know each other well. He also shows in the amateur owner division with his owner, and he's just a sweet guy. He jumps amazingly and he always normally goes around the same way, so we always know what to expect,” Colvin said.

As the highest placing rider in a field of 37 derby challengers, Colvin discussed what set her top horses apart. “Playwright went a little earlier in the morning, and I thought he gave a great effort. I probably went a little more conservative in the handy portion on him, because he hasn't really ever competed out on a field,” Colvin said of her second-place mount. “With Gabriel, I know him a little more and I've been out on the field with him, so I think I was smoother and not so conservative in his handy portion – I feel like that's what set him apart.”

Adding a derby victory on the grass to last week’s international derby win in Tryon Stadium, Colvin’s team has seen an abundance of success during the tryon summer series “We added the last two weeks to our circuit, and it's been going great, so we’ll come back!”
