Mill Spring, NC - May 28, 2023 - The $78,000 PBR Ironpeddlers Chute Out Grand Prix CSI 2* was rescheduled to 9am Saturday morning with the cancellation of Saturday Night Lights presented by Tryon Horse & Home due to weather conditions, with 53 entries presenting for the Anthony D’Ambrosio (USA) course design. Kristen Vanderveen (USA) and Bull Run's Faustino de Tili, one of 10 clear rounds presented by Stuller Power Solutions, flew through the short course in a time of 34.24 seconds to take the win. Luiz Francisco de Azevedo (BRA) and HFG Quaman (Diamant De Semilly x Quidam’s Rubin), Santa Cecilia Stables LLC’s 2013 BH gelding, scored the reserve slot on a time of 35.65 seconds, while Samuel Parot (CHI) completed the podium riding Trinidad Soffia’s Cumorka Z (Copin Van de Broy x Calato), the 2013 Zangersheide mare, after their 35.87-second performance.
VanderVeen and the 2005 Belgian Warmblood Stallion (Berlin x Darco) owned by Bull Run Jumpers Five LLC had not originally planned to challenge the class together at Tryon International Equestrian Center & Resort (Tryon International), but she felt that “Frosty” would enjoy a daytime class and brought out “old faithful,” as she described her longtime partner.
“There were definitely some fast people in the jump off. I thought Hunter [Holloway] put down a great trip. Frosty is definitely just a quicker moving horse than hers. I wanted to be as tidy as she was, and really just stay focused with him,” VanderVeen detailed.
With a horse who excels at speed tests, VanderVeen admitted that she needed to keep her cool when navigating the jump off in:
“If I start trying too hard, I'll actually go too fast! So, I was just thinking about keeping the turns really tight, and then letting him open up on the last line.”
“The course designer did a great job,” she said of the course, which tested experienced and up-and-coming horses and riders alike at the CSI 2* level. “He got the right amount clear. There was nothing too scary or trappy. I have a young horse that I jumped as well, and I thought it was a good learning experience for him, too.”
