Mill Spring, NC - June 20, 2024 - Tryon International Equestrian Center & Resort (Tryon International) hosted Tryon Summer Dressage 1 & 2 CPEDI 3* Thursday-Sunday at the venue alongside bustling Hunter/Jumper competition and entertainment events. For Para Dressage competitors there was a singular focus to the weekend: Paralympic Qualifiers.
Perrigo U.S. Para Dressage Team Earns Gold in the CPEDI3*
The U.S. final team selection for the Paris Paralympics is set to take place in early August, with Tryon Summer Dressage 1&2 CPEDI 3* serving as the final observation event of the 1.5 year selection process. The US team for the weekend, composed of riders Cynthia Screnci, Kate Shoemaker, Roxanne Trunnell and Sydney Collier, earned a collective average of 419.955%, which earned them the top team placing. Team Canada, with riders Jody Schloss, Kyla Sorensen and Wanda Jamieson, displayed excellent rides as well and finished with a collective average of 381.417%.
Screnci and her young gelding, For Memory 4 (For Dance 4 x Destano), received exceptional marks for movements in the canter and walk which warranted a score of 74.458%. Ellie Brimmer, current USPEA president, and her mount My Moment trotted to the top placement in the Grade II Grand Prix Freestyle, earning high marks for harmony and submission.
The weekend’s highest scores were awarded to Roxanne Trunnell and Karen Flint’s gelding Fan Tastico H (Fürstenball OLD x Weltenmeyer), with their top score standing at 79.375% in the Grade I Grand Prix B Test. She breached the seventies with the scores from the judges at E and C.
The weekend before coming to Tryon, Kate Shoemaker won the Grade IV Grand Prix A and B with two fabulous performances with her mare Vianne (Vitalis x Ramiro’s Bube) in the final European Para observation event— The Hagen CPEDI. At Tryon International, Shoemaker piloted Fiona Howard’s gelding Colijin (Son de Niro x Ulster) to the top placing in Friday’s Grand Prix A. With such an impressive record and busy schedule, Shoemaker still holds her love for horses above competition, she shared. “It really is all about the horse; they are like the second half of our heart.”
National Competitors Vie for Top Spots in Packed Divisions
Tryon’s Summer Dressage 1&2 were packed with excitement and boasted stiff competition in the qualifying classes in particular. Judges Cindi Wylie, Ulf Wadeborn and Adrienne Pot recognized outstanding rides, reflected by significant percentage leads of the top riders in certain divisions. Aiken professional Jeremy Steinberg re-entered the competition world, piloting his young horse Milo to a 4% lead in the First Level 3 division with a 75.555%. Young rider Kindred Batts led the Training Level 3 division by 5% with a 71.6% on Crystal Hansen’s gelding Warimple fan Monstamastate.
