Mill Spring, NC — July 17, 2024 – Luis Pedro Biraben (ARG) brought home double podium placings in Thursday morning’s $32,000 ProElite Welcome Stake CSI 3*, taking the win aboard Chacco Bumpy (Chacco-Blue x Toulon) on an impressive time of 31.18 seconds. Samuel Parot (CHI) and his own Tiffany De Olid (Huppydam Des Horts x Unknown), the 2012 Selle Français mare, took second on the Ken Krome (USA) short track with a time of 31.95 seconds. With 32.00 seconds on the clock, Biraben continued his winning ways to earn third with Vasco 109, (Vigo D Arsouilles Stx x Oboe Incipit), the 2015 Bavarian Warmblood gelding owned in partnership with Miguel Madero.

“This was a nice course. My horses are jumping really well,” Biraben noted upon his win.

Kristen VanderVeen Comes Out On Top in $32,000 Two-Phase CSI 3* on Bull Run’s Faustino de Tili

July 17, 2024 - Kristen VanderVeen came out on top in the $32,000 Two-Phase CSI 3* on Bull Run’s Faustino de Tili (Berlin x Darco). VanderVeen and the 2005 Belgian Warmblood soared through the jump off with 25.28 seconds on the clock. Samuel Parot, aboard David Guetta (Zento x Vigaro), the 2008 Dutch Warmblood gelding, placed second out of 27 trips with a time of 25.52 seconds. With a time of 25.72 seconds, Amanda Derbyshire and Otto BH (Norton D’ Eole x Toulon), the 2012 Zangersheide stallion, collected a third place finish.

VanderVeen and the 2005 Belgian Warmblood stallion have made many appearances at Tryon International over the years. “Frosty is pretty famous, especially here in Tryon. He's been my partner for eight or nine years. It's great to have him here – he's 19 now, and he's still winning. He's won the last three ranking classes he's jumped,” VanderVeen said.

“I thought [the course] was a really nice opener, and pretty simple, which actually can be a little bit of a downfall for Frosty and I. If he gets a little bored, he gets casual about his jumping,” VanderVeen said of the Ken Krome course. “I tried to ride most of it like a speed round, and in the second half there weren't any special inside turns you could do, which actually worked to my advantage because he has a huge stride. I was able to just leave out some strides and go fast,” VanderVeen detailed.

Addy Ross and Lord Dixon Claim $5,000 USHJA Junior/Amateur National Derby Presented by AP Hassinger

July 19, 2024 – Besting a field of 40 teams, Addy Ross (Oklahoma City, OK) and Lord Dixon (Unknown x Unknown), took home the blue ribbon in the $5,000 USHJA Junior/Amateur National Derby Presented by AP Hassinger with a score of 173. Isabella Griffin (Hampton Cove, AL) earned a score of 169, finishing second with Diacasir (Diarado x Ucarola), the 2013 Holsteiner gelding. With a score of 166.5, Ava Turpin (Atlanta, GA) and Yahtzee (Unknown x Unknown), the 2012 Warmblood gelding, placed third on Emily Heine’s Hunt N Go course.

Ross and Lord Dixon’s success in Friday’s derby speaks loudly to the strength of their recently formed partnership. “I’ve been riding him for about a month and this is our first derby together. I'm leasing him from a girl at my barn because my younger horse is out right now,” Ross explained.

Ross and the 2009 Warmblood gelding made their debut last week during Tryon Summer 5, but she said, “winning the derby today has been the highlight of our time at Tryon.”

The pair were able to really shine in the handy section of Emily Heine’s course. “I felt he rode a lot of the inside turns really well for me. We sometimes have an issue on the right lead going to the right lead oxers, and I felt like we really fixed that problem. He really did great.”

Zone 3’s Team Gazelle Prevail in USHJA 1.10m Amateur Zone Team Championship

July 19, 2024 – With USHJA Zones competition continuing at Tryon International, more individual and team champions have been crowned. Among these winners was Team Gazelle of Zone 3, composed of Madeline Mohn (Sykesville, MD), Charlotte Powers (Leesburg, VA), and Rebecca Forbes Smith (Zion Crossroads, VA). Dodging rain showers in Tryon Stadium, the trio captured the USHJA 1.10m Amateur Zone Team Championship.

Partnered with her own Caracas, Madeline Mohn celebrated the fact that all three members of Team Gazelle posted clear rounds on the team championship day. “We all went clear, so it was a good day! For me personally, I felt like this was a really hard course,” Mohn pointed out. “You had to ride it, and you had to make those turns to get in the time allowed. We just went out there and did amazing!”

Mohn explained how special it was to her for the chance to compete at Zones. “My favorite thing about Zones is being here and being able to have this opportunity to come here with my horse – he's always there for me. I love riding in the big arena [Tryon Stadium] too, that always is a fun time.”

Charlotte Powers echoed Mohn’s gratitude for the team’s clear rounds. “What a fortunate team to be on and what a blast, always at this competition!”

Posting the second fastest clear trip of the championship round, Powers credited her partner, Escot 6 . “Today, I was a little tired, and my horse really was there for me and helped me out in a couple places. I'm really grateful for that. [There were] really fun, technical courses,” she noted.

“This venue is just fabulous. The exhibitor parties and all the nice touches are so special. This is the only team competition that we get to do, and you get to know people so much better by just getting to hang out more and actually be in a team format. I will always be wanting to come to Zones for that reason,” Powers said of her experience at Tryon International.

Rebecca Forbes Smith, riding Ferno Van De Hermitage, also noted the technical challenges of the Zones courses. “My horse felt great today – he stepped up to it, and was looking for where we needed to be next. It was a fun, great team to be on.”

Forbes Smith concluded by expressing how much competitors enjoy the team aspect offered at Zones. “I love the venue here, and love getting to do the team format, because we don't get to do it anywhere else. I haven’t done this team format in the 1.10 meters since 2018 or 2019, so it was a lot of fun to be back doing this! It’s always fun to show in Tryon Stadium as well.”
