Cumorka Z (Copin Van De Broy x Calato), the 2013 Zangersheide mare owned by Trinidad Soffia Richard, has seen numerous top placings with Samuel Parot this year. “The mare is very fast every week,” Parot commented. “I jump her in the 2*s, qualify, and am [often] second or third, but today is a win.”

“The course was very difficult today,” Parot said of Guilherme Jorge (BRA)’s design. “All the [jump off qualifiers] ride well. But with one down, or a time fault, it’s a very careful course. Guilherme is the best course designer in the world for me,” Parot detailed.

Cantero [Connor], the 2013 gelding owned by GA Stables LLC and Gabriella have been a team since November. They normally compete in Equitation together, but they have jumped in a few derbies together over the past couple of weeks. “He’s been great and he is learning the Hunter lifestyle,” Curry shared.

With 79 points in the first round, and a score of 90 in the handy, Curry explained, “The first round was pretty good, but he was funny on the grass in some areas. After we had jumped once around the ring, I knew he’d be even better and quieter coming into the handy.” She added, “I was so happy with this round today and the derby field is just so fun to jump on!”

Skyhawk (Quick Lauro Z x Aevita), the 2009 warmblood gelding owned by Laura Wasserman, has been a reliable partner for Stella and her family. “I've actually had this horse for a very long time,” she shared. “He’s been a bit of a family horse – my mom showed him and I've shown him. He's incredible, he's brave, and he's always there for me. Derbies are what he excels at.”

Thirteen horse and rider pairs rode the Andreas Christiansen (ECU)-designed derby course. “The first round went great,” Wasserman said of her preliminary trip that earned her a score of 91. “He went out there, put his ears forward, and was with me every step of the way. The handy is what I enjoyed most, and he's so good at them for being such a big horse…he can turn on a dime. So that was really fun to do as well!”

Wasserman noted that this win felt “very good! It's only my second time winning any type of derby and it's always nice to have a win like this.”

Wasserman will remain at Tryon to compete in Summer 6. “It's such a nice facility here. All the rings are nice, and they do a really good job putting on every class and making everything feel special.”

“We have had Halo since he was five, and he is one of my oldest and favorite partners. I am super happy with how fit he is and it felt like he was coming out just as excited as he went in” Leahy shared about the 2012 Selle Français gelding.

Taking some time off after Florida Leahy explained, “I’ve been riding The Gray Man for a little bit under a year, but he’s been super great. It has been fun for me to have the two of them as a young rider getting into some of these bigger classes.”

The $6,000 Two Phase CSI 2* had 42 entries and was a challenging course designed by Guilherme Jorge (BRA). Leahy described her strategy, “In the speed phase our plan was to keep that up tempo and just try to make the turns a little bit tighter. Practicing being fast and efficient especially with the different demands of an FEI course is always good.”

Caelinn Leahy and The Gray Man will also be competing in the $39,000 ProElite Welcome Stake CSI 2* during their time at Tryon International. “When we come to Tryon we just feel spoiled. At the end of the day, there’s no other facility like it.”
