Caroline Pamukcu and HSH Blake Lead Wire to Wire in CCI 4*-L Division

Caroline Pamukcu (USA) and HSH Blake, fresh off their top-five finish at the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event in the CCI 4*-S Division, led wire to wire in the CCI 4*-L Division at Tryon International. The duo carried forward a score of 28.6 from Dressage, going double-clear in both Cross-Country and Show Jumping phases to bring home the win. In reserve, Will Faudree (USA) and Mama’s Magic Way, the 2011 Hanoverian gelding (Mighty Magic x Star Regent XX) owned by Jennifer Mosing and Sterling Silver Stables, also held their podium spot firmly all weekend, adding two time penalties to their dressage score to finish on a score of 30.9. Elisabeth Halliday-Sharp (USA) and Cooley Quicksilver, the 2011 Irish Sport Horse gelding (Womanizer x Creggan Diamond) owned by The Monster Partnership, rounded out the podium with third place, holding a total of 35.2 faults after three rounds.

Pamukcu emphasized that with a major event behind her and a long format test in front of her, the strategy for HSH Blake, the 2015 Irish Sport Horse gelding (Tolan R. x Kannan) owned by Mollie Hoff, Sherrie Martin, and Caroline and Deniz Pamukcu, was to be as relaxed as possible ahead of competition at Tryon International. In fact, her horse didn’t wear a Dressage saddle until arena familiarization took place on Thursday, she revealed:

“It was really important for me to keep things really minimal between Kentucky and this, so we did lots of hacking and trail riding and trot sets, and not so much pressure,” she detailed. “The first time we put a Dressage saddle on was on Thursday for arena familiarization, and we just kept everything fun and light, with lots of cavaletti, canter poles and that sort of thing.”

Pamukcu said that she continued her low-pressure mentality through her Dressage test. “He was great in Dressage; I tried to put more of a relaxed test in than in Kentucky. For Cross-Country, the [US] Team asked me to go double-clear. It was a little bit hard because he pulled a shoe early on in the course, so I was able to kind of readjust my plan and do more straight routes than turning routes. But he really adapted well. He's mega fit, so he made the 10 minutes feel super easy!”

With Paris 2024 in her sights, Pamukcu emphasized that it was important to her and to her mount that they compete at a high-atmosphere venue with good footing as they progress towards team selections. The footing is always amazing here, for Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross-Country. It's a great venue, and it's important for us to go to another big atmosphere event. And he's hopefully ready to rock and roll!”

Despite her string of successes and multiple horses competing at high levels, Pamukcu emphasized the role of the team around her that makes everything possible, as “just the jockey” in a much larger organization. “I want to thank my family and his owners, Mollie Hoff and Sherrie Martin, my mom. Thank you to Sharon White, my coach, and Bobby Costello, for helping me, and Pippa Funnel for being my mentor. I have a huge team behind me,” she concluded. “My business partner Kelly Hutchison sourced this horse, and she's been with me since day one with him, and there are a lot of people that go into this. I'm just the jockey. It's more the people and my horses that do all the work, and I just kind of sit there.”
