With Cross-Country course design by Clayton Fredericks on the White Oak Cross-Country Course and Show Jumping tracks by Brody Robertson, exhibitors competed across Tryon International’s expansive venue throughout three days of competition. Read more about division highlights below.

William Coleman and Off The Record are CCI 4*-S Champions

William Coleman (USA) saw the top of the podium twice over the course of the weekend, taking wins in the CCI 4*-S and CCI 3*-S divisions. Teaming up with longtime partner Off The Record in the CCI 4*-S division, Coleman added another victory to the gelding’s list of accomplishments. The Ocala-based rider marked a 30.1 in Dressage, coupled with a double clear in the Show Jumping phase, to secure second place at the conclusion of day one. With minimal time penalties on the final phase of Cross-Country, Coleman and Off The Record capped off their 4* performance with a score of 38.5. Partnered with Carmango (Chirivell x Templer GL XX), Dan Kreitl (USA) took second place in the CCI 4*-S division, holding onto a top spot through all three phases. Kreitl and the 2013 Westphalian gelding, owned by Kay Dixon, finished on a total score of 44.6. Riding Jewelent (Valent x Roselier) to third place, Phillip Dutton (USA) accrued 46.9 points with the 2012 Irish Sport Horse gelding owned by the Jewelent Group.

“‘Timmy’ is kind of like an old shoe,” Coleman lovingly said of Off The Record (Arkansas x ARD Ohio). “We’ve been together since he was a baby, and he’s 15 now. He’s one of the best Cross-Country horses I’ve ever had in my whole career. He loves it, first of all, and he always gives you this great feeling of enthusiasm when you leave the start box.”

With Clayton Fredericks building the track on the White Oak Cross-Country Course, riders saw a number of challenges on the route with the reimagined start and finish lines. Coleman detailed, however, that Off The Record tackled the course with ease. “Clayton set some tricky but very good questions, and Timmy just picked them off like they were schooling exercises.”

Coleman and the 2009 Irish Sport Horse gelding have their sights set on international competition later this fall. “We’re going to aim for the Pau 5* in France at the end of October, and I thought this was an excellent prep for that,” Coleman noted.

With Clayton Fredericks setting a fresh Cross-Country course for competitors to tackle, Coleman acknowledged the merits of the new course. “Clayton reimagined the routing of what they do here on the Cross-Country, and I really like it. The footing feels good — it’s probably as good as I’ve felt it. I’m really excited about the future of this place, and with Clayton’s courses, this is going to be a really wonderful venue for us for hopefully many, many years.”

Coleman also acknowledged the significance that Tryon International has held in the competition schedules of eventers around the country. “Tryon has been a big part of the eventing calendar in the Spring and Fall for many years, but I think this particular chapter of the venue is exciting. I’m really encouraged by what we’ve seen here, and I can’t wait to come back,” he concluded.

William Coleman Leads CCI3*-S Competition with Cold Red Rum

Aboard his second winner of the weekend, Coleman (USA) piloted Cold Red Rum (Cassone x Quo Vados), owned by the Cold Red Rum Syndicate, to CCI3*-S victory in a field of 18 teams. Holding first place for the entirety of 3* competition, Coleman and Cold Red Rum kicked off their weekend scoring a 26.6 in Dressage and a double clear Show Jumping effort. In their final phase, Coleman and his equine partner tackled the Cross-Country course in 6:26, adding only 1.6 penalties to their overall performance. Rising from her initial 10th place position, Autumn Schweiss (USA) completed the 3* division in second, aboard Julie Schweiss’ Bamford CF (Bon Balou x Lamentos). Schweiss and the 2015 Oldenburg gelding ended with a score of 37.7. Rounding out the podium with a score of 39.6 was Hayden Wathen (USA) and Contestor (Contango x Killer Jer), her own 2007 Dutch Warmblood gelding.

“Cold Red Rum is a horse I’ve had for a few years, and he’s been a good performer at the 3* level. He’s just back from a very mild injury, so he’s only run a couple times this year,” Coleman revealed.

Coleman went on to describe the 2013 Westphalian gelding as “a great Cross-Country horse. He came out of the start box today like it was the best day of his life. He was pumped to be here, and gave me a great ride around what I thought was a stout 3* course.”

Caroline Pamukcu Doubles Down With Two CCI2*-L Podium Placings

Dominating the leaderboard in the CCI2*-L standings, Caroline Pamukcu (USA) guided HSH Sebastian (Silvano x Benefilial) to top honors, notably with double clear efforts in Show Jumping and Cross-Country. Pamukcu and the 2017 Irish Sport Horse gelding owned by Sherrie Martin and Gayle Davis were crowned division champions on a score of 29.3. Scoring 35.0 to take second, Pamukcu notched another top spot with Luann McElduff and Sherrie Martin’s HSH Enticement (Freeman VDL x Cavalier Royale), the 2017 Irish Sport Horse gelding. Rising from ninth place to third over the three phases, Nilson Moreira Da Silva (BRA) rode FGF DollarsforPennies (Goldencents x Midnight Lute), the 2016 Thoroughbred gelding owned by Cavalo Sporting LLC, to 35.9 points.

Dan Kreitl Brings Home CCI2*-S Victory On Odyssey

Adding another top podium spot to his stint during the Yanmar America Eventing Series at Tryon International, Dan Kreitl (USA) joined forces with his own 2014 Thoroughbred gelding, Odyssey (Temple City x Seeking The Gold) in the CCI 2*-S division. Kreitl and Odyssey ended their third and final phase with a score of 38.7. Just behind, with a score of 38.8, Madeleine Richards rode her own 2016 Westphalian gelding, The Turning Point (Rocky Lee x Orsetto XX), to second place honors. Owner and rider of Fly High Quality (Obos Quality 004 x Visa Aldatus Z), Kerra Johnson (USA) collected 39.3 points with the 2013 Irish Sport Horse gelding to secure third.

Boyd Martin Is On Point With On Cue For Advanced Division Win

Coming back to Tryon International to defend last year’s win in the Advanced division, Boyd Martin (USA) piloted Christine Turner’s On Cue (Cabri D’Elle x Primitive Rising), the 2005 Selle Français mare. Martin and On Cue remained within the top two positions throughout all three phases, ultimately taking first on a score of 56.8. Martin and his 2024 Olympics partner, Fedarman B (Eurocommerce Washington x Fedor), the 2010 Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by the Annie Goodwin Syndicate, took second in the field of Advanced entries, earning a score of 66.5. Sitting in tenth place after the initial Dressage phase, Lucienne Bellissimo (GBR) and Easter Star (Estrello x Quasimodo Z), climbed the leaderboard to claim third. Bellissimo and the 2015 Dutch Warmblood mare owned by Horse Scout Eventing finished on a score of 70.1.
